Casino Comedy in the South
Casino stages have rattled with laughter for almost 65
years. Rewind back to Las Vegas the days of the 1940’s at the El Rancho
where comedians were on stage to lighten the gambler’s moods. Then in the
50’s and 60’s casinos offered acts such as Don Rickles, Buddy Hackett,
Shecky Greene, Alan King, Louis Prima and Keely Smith in lounges performing
from the time the sun went down until it came up the next morning. The cover
charge was to just buy a couple of drinks. If you rewind even further back
to the old Wild West saloons and the days of hot poker games and bang bang
shoot ‘em ups there were comedy acts then. So it stands to reason Comedy and
Gambling go together like Peas and Carrots.
It’s difficult to talk about Comedy in the South without mentioning Mr.
Dana Nelson from the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica, MS. Dana originally came
to the casino industry after a 10 year stint with Ringling Bros Circus. He
was the clown with Circus Circus in Tunica and is now the theatre manager
for Gold Strike Casino. Dana was recently the opening act for John Hefferon,
the Last Comic Standing, bringing down the house with laughter from his
naïve looks yet hilarious slapstick comedy. Dana said recently in an
interview, “One of the most enjoyable things about being a comic and
watching the audience, is to watch the people relax, let go, and embrace the
entertainment.” Also he said, “I would like to see more people take time out
and watch the different kinds of comedy acts that are now out there”.
So…take it from Dana… Take a break from your gaming and enjoy the comedy
acts in the casinos of the South. Relax, unwind, enjoy. Laughter is the Best
Medicine. Laugh 'til your face hurts. You won't regret one moment filled
with a smile, a chuckle, or a good belly laugh.
Satellite TV and the internet have contributed to the global influence on
entertainment acts even comedy. Our taste in comedy has broadened. We are
more adventuresome to watch and appreciate new comedy acts from around the
world. The Casinos bring us the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of
entertainment.
In
America now instead of the flower squirting big shoed clown, we have come to
identify as clown comedy we have embraced other forms of comedy such as
Blue Man Group and Aga-Boom. Headliner stand up comics are still the
main stay of casino entertainment. Comedians come from the TV stage to your

southern casinos.
D.L. Hugley
April 2nd, 2005 – Grand Casino – Biloxi, MS
D.L. Hugley got his first break on HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam” from there to
his own TV series. Now you can catch him on stage doing what he does
best…making people laugh. Hugley says, “I think there’s a lot of material in
my act that is positive and real, which is what my show is all about. I just
want to be great at making people laugh……everybody wants to be great at
something and I want to be great at making people laugh.”
Sinbad
April 8th, 2005 – Beau Rivage Casino – Biloxi, MS
Sinbad wasn't born Sinbad. He
evolved into Sinbad. Born David Adkins in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Sinbad’s
life’s course started out in Basketball with a yearn to be a Harlem
Globetrotter. Sinbad has been on Stage, TV, and movies. He doesn’t tell
jokes. “I don’t know any” he admits. Sinbad has become one of the country’s
most famous comedians telling life stories as he walks up and down the
stage, stalking. His material is not written but relived in story form.
Sinbad does not use profanity in his act he says, “I want people to bring
the whole family to my show”. Family is important to Sinbad, his production
company, David and Goliath Productions is made up of his brothers and
sisters, which keeps him grounded.
Larry The Cable Guy
April 30th, 2005 - Beau Rivage - Biloxi,MS
"Git-R-Done" and "Lord, I Apologize" are two catch phrases Larry The Cable
Guy has introduced in the American Language. Even though Larry sounds like
he has a southern drawl, he was actually raised on a Pig Farm in Pawnee
City, Nebraska. Larry was born Dan Whitney, but became Larry the Cable Guy
when he set out to make his career in comedy instead of being a bellhop at
the Ramada Inn. He proudly wears the title of Redneck. Larry's now famous
one liners brought the comedian to the attention of audiences nation wide
beginning with a dare from friends in 1986 to go onstage. In 2000 Jeff
Foxworthy invited Larry to join the Blue Collar Comedy Tour along with Bill
Engvall. The tour turned into a highly rated television show called Blue
Collar TV. The Cable Guy brings to his audiences knee slapping solutions,
opinions and unbarred slant on politics.
Whoopi Goldberg

George Carlin with his Friend Dennis Blair
May 14th, 2005 – Grand Casino Biloxi, MS
George Carlin is a salty stand up comedian with a monologue that flirts with
the freedom of speech with strong adult content emphasizing on social
commentary and language. For over 40 years Carlin has amused audiences on
TV, stage and movies with his frank uninhibited humor. Carlin brings his
friend, Dennis Blair to stage with his guitar and plethora of voices and
characters combined with his slight depraved sense of humor.
Vickie Lawrence and Mama: A two Woman Show
June 11th, 2005 - Grand Casino Biloxi, MS
Vickie Lawrence, Emmy award winning comedienne, brings Thelma Harper,
"Mama" out of the closet and on to the stage. The multi talented Ms
Lawrence's Career expands decades of comedy. Vickie joined the cast of the
legendary "Carol Burnett Show" as a teenager after winning a Carol Burnett
Look Alike Contest. The now 54 year old comedienne is touring the country
with performances on Casino stages with "Mama" from the TV series, "Mama's
Family". "My new show will not be a retrospective," Vickie explains. "We
are designing a show that is a mixture of stand-up comedy, music and my
observations about real life." "I think people will get a kick out of the
things Mama has an opinion about. We're creating new material with a more
modern and cutting edge. Where Mama is concerned, expect the unexpected.
There's really nothing she can't do," she says. "I hope people will be
pleasantly surprised by a side of Vicki they may never have seen…I know they
will be looking forward to Mama, and for her part, that crazy old gal will
be up to the challenge.”
Brett Butler

Brett Butler from the TV series “Grace Under Fire” returns to her stand up
comedy roots. For 23 years Brett has revealed her insight and perception of
growing up in the South. As one of today’s most gifted comediennes, she also
touches on her failed marriage and today’s politics putting together a show
guaranteed to make you belly laugh.

You
might be a red-neck if you lost a loved one to Kudzu. If you are southern or
have ever been in the South or you know someone from the South, you can
relate to the wit of Jeff Foxworthy. Jeff’s comedy has left a footprint on
Casinos. Aristocrat slot machine
manufacture has a slot machine out called “You Just Might Be A Redneck
If…” As you spin the reels, the symbols are old whiskey jugs, and some
of the characters straight from Foxworthy’s imagination pop up. Not only do
you experience bonus rounds with things like a bug zapper but in the
machine’s sound is Jeff Foxworthy laughing. You would think a slot machine
that laughs at you would not be very popular. Just the opposite, you almost
have to make reservations just to play. The slot company knew their “peas
and carrots” when they developed this one.
Aga-Boom

performances. Four players make up Aga-Boom, with Dimitri and Iryna as the
two lead players who were the featured clowns in Cirque du Soleil’s “O” and

George Wallace

"1995 Funniest Male Standup Comic" from the American Comedy Awards. George
Wallace, a native of
Atlanta,
went from being a successful business man to a job writing for "The Red Foxx
Show". George is famous for being able to read his audience and has been
referred to as "the guy who can roll the room over if it's dead". Day to day
moments and his uncanny talent of being able to find humor everywhere.
George says, "There is no sex or drug that makes you feel as good as being
funny on stage. Nothing is better than comedy. I'd do it for
free.....well......" You can find George Wallace on stage in casinos across
the country including Las Vegas doing what George like to do best ....making
people laugh.
